Meet the pioneering prostate specialist
Professor Eden is recognised as one of the best surgeons for prostatectomy in the UK, with an impressive career dedicated to innovation in urological surgery, attending Guy’s Hospital Medical School and King’s College School for Medicine and Dentistry. After earning his MBBS in 1985 from the University of London—winning both the Surgery and Paediatric Prizes—he completed his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1995 and a Master of Surgery degree in 1997.
As a surgical trainee, he pioneered in laparoscopy urological surgery, performing the UK’s first laparoscopic pyeloplasty in 1994, the first laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in 2000, and the first laparoscopic radical cystectomy in 2001.
In mid-2016, Professor Eden became one of the UK’s highest-volume surgeons, performing the UK’s first Retzius-sparing robotically-assisted radical prostatectomy—a groundbreaking feature in The Times. In 2018, he was again included in the Daily Mail’s guide of top 10 prostate cancer surgeons in Britain, along with two other Santis surgeons, having also been featured indivudually in 2010.
Outside of his surgical career, he is an Instrument-Rated private pilot, a PADI Advanced Open Water diver, and a veteran of marathons and triathlons. He is currently pursuing a BA Honours degree in Photography.
Professor Eden’s world-renowned experience
Professor Christopher Eden has performed over 3,000 major laparoscopic urological procedures, making him one of the most experienced prostate specialists globally. His contributions to laparoscopic urology include more than 50 peer-reviewed papers, nine book chapters, and a published book.
His advanced training in kidney and prostate surgery involved working with world-leading experts at prestigious institutions, including the Institute Mutualiste Montsouris in Paris, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and the Cleveland Clinic in the USA, thanks to a Travelling Fellowship from the Ethicon Foundation Fund.
He was awarded the Independent Healthcare Award winner for Medical Practice in 2007 and was described in a Daily Mail poll of 40 UK Consultant Urologists as ‘probably the leader in the field of keyhole radical prostatectomy.’ In 2012, his research was Highly Commended at the prestigious UK Quality in Care in Oncology awards.
Professor Eden reviews leading urological journals, including European Urology (where he was named Reviewer of the Month in April 2010), The Asian Journal of Andrology, The British Journal of Urology International, The Journal of Urology, The Scandanavian Journal of The Urology and Nephrology, and Urology professional journals. He also serves as a Specialist Advisor to the UK’s National Institute for Clinical Health and Excellence and is a member of the International Laparoscopy Prostate Cancer Working Group.
An internationally sought-after expert, he has operated, lectured, and provided instruction on laparoscopic urology across Europe, Africa, America, Asia, and Australasia. His current clinical research focuses on high-risk prostate cancer surgery and extended pelvic lymphadenectomy for intermediate-risk prostate cancer.
