The practice is one of the highest volume prostatectomy practices in the UK. In prostate surgery the experience of the individual surgeon is closely linked to results in cancer control, urinary continence and erectile function, which is why a high-volume, published specialist matters more here than in most fields.
Technique
What sets the surgery apart Three advances in one centre
Three advances define surgery at Santis. Individually each is offered elsewhere; used together in one centre, they are what distinguishes the practice.
Retzius-sparing robotic prostatectomy
Santis was the first centre in the UK to perform it and has the greatest experience. The approach preserves the supporting structures at the front of the pelvis and is associated with an earlier return of urinary continence.
The da Vinci Single Port robot
Used as the standard approach in all patients. The prostate is removed through a single small incision rather than the five or six separate ports a conventional multiport robot requires. Ideal when using the extraperitoneal approach in patients after major abdominal surgery.
Intra-operative NeuroSAFE pathology
Prostate tissue is examined by a Consultant Pathologist while the operation is still underway, so nerve tissue can be preserved wherever the margins are clear, and the plan adjusted immediately where they are not.

Never managed in isolation Every plan goes to a panel
Every patient's imaging and treatment plan is reviewed at a multidisciplinary meeting before anything is agreed. The panel brings together at least ten other highly experienced consultants across urology, oncology, pathology, radiology and nuclear medicine.
It means the recommendation you receive is not one surgeon's view. It has been examined by specialists who each look at a different part of the same problem.

Outcomes at Santis have been collected prospectively for 26 years, published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences. Patients choosing a surgeon deserve to see real data:
