Understanding Prostate Cancer What it is, and why testing matters
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK. It develops in the prostate, a small gland between the bladder and the penis. In its early stages it often causes no symptoms, which is why testing and early diagnosis matter so much. When it is found while still contained within the prostate, the outlook is generally very good and effective treatment is available.

Diagnosis
Effective treatment begins with accurate diagnosis. We use PSA and Stockholm-3 testing, high-resolution prostate MRI and, where needed, targeted biopsy.
Multidisciplinary planning
No prostate cancer patient should be managed in isolation. Every case is reviewed by an expert multidisciplinary team including urology, oncology, radiology, pathology and nuclear medicine before a plan is agreed.
Treatment
Depending on the stage and grade of the cancer, your age, general health and priorities, options may range from active surveillance to surgery. For men who need surgery, our specialism is robotic radical prostatectomy, performed with the da Vinci Single Port robot and, in suitable patients, using nerve-sparing techniques guided by real-time NeuroSAFE pathology.

We collect our outcomes prospectively, regularly publish them in peer-reviewed journals and are committed to transparency in reporting cancer-control, continence and potency results. Our published figures include:
- Continence
- 76.4% of men are pad-free at one month and 97.7% at one year.
- Potency
- 27.8% of non-diabetic men with normal potency prior to surgery and having both nerve bundles preserved achieve penetrative intercourse at one month, rising to 78.1% at one year.
- Cancer removal
- A positive surgical margin rate of 9.2% for pT2 (organ-confined) prostate cancers.
- Cancer control
- 10-year cancer-specific survival of 99.88% (a cancer-specific mortality of 0.12%).

Frequently Asked Questions
What about focal therapy?
Up to 80% of prostate cancers are multifocal (found in more than one location), which helps to explain why, in a UK series of 3,477 men treated with either HIFU or cryotherapy focal therapy, 34% of patients needed re-treatment and 46% of men with unfavourable Gleason 7 prostate cancer needed salvage (usually surgical) treatment (Light et al., 2026). In a meta-analysis of 56 focal therapy studies by Tay et al. (2024), 38% of patients treated this way needed to wear a pad following treatment (2.3% after Santis surgery) and 54% had moderate to severe erectile dysfunction (21.9% after Santis surgery).
